Prayer for Marcos Marquez

Over the years, we have lived through things that have woven themselves into our common story. We are in one of those right now.

When you read “The Relentless Pursuit” (our 25th Anniversary Book) you cannot help but be captured by the story of Marcos Marquez. Marcos has new life in him. Anyone who meets him will testify to that. Last August Marcos was arrested; he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. When we heard about it, we were on the beach, having our annual family vacation. We thought it would be one of those situations where everything gets cleared up, and with very little problem he would go back home to his family.

Keep in mind, Marcos has a bad past. He has walked into his new life in Christ out of an old life that still names him. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is a dangerous thing for someone who physically looks like the “bad guy”. Marcos was placed in a metal cell where he had no contact with other inmates. He had absolutely no legal representation from August to early January. He languished, clung to his faith, tried to trust God, tried not to lose his mind and all hope. Meanwhile, we were desperately trying to find him a lawyer. No stone was unturned. Sometimes, I thought the whole legal community must have by now heard this name. He had no public defender, which was his legal right. It just kept falling through. The courts did nothing to remedy this. Private lawyers were willing, for a hefty fee. We prayed. Many of you prayed. His story leaked out. And then miraculously, Snell and Wilmer, the largest law firm in the state of AZ agreed to take his case. We were overwhelmed; the Lord was rescuing our brother.

That was January. His lawyers are convinced of his innocence. In fact, staff at the firm have formed a prayer group for him, after transcribing his interview tapes. At almost every turn, we expect good news. How hard is it to use the real hard concrete evidence to prove a man innocent? It’s hard, when you have a past that many against you would forever want to link you to it.

Marco’s story plays like a Grisham novel where the lawyers take on the underdog. This past Friday our lawyers won their motion to remand to the grand jury. That means the prosecutor has lots of work ahead of her to present what evidence she has. We don’t think she has much.

I’m hopeful that by catching you up on our brother’s story you will pray for him. I have no idea why this is happening – spiritual warfare comes to mind, revelations of justice in our courts, obedience and faith in the midst of adversity … Whatever it is, we have a precious brother in Marcos Marquez and I can assure you, it means the world to him to know you care about his situation. His little son said to his mom, “when Dad gets out of jail, the first thing he’ll do is go to church”.

We are setting up a prayer blog for him and will from now on bring you updates that don’t jeopardize his case. You can write him notes here and we will get them to him.

God bless you dear friends,

kit

I hadn't realized that the person you had referenced long ago from the ministry who'd been imprisoned was Marcos. Thanks for the update today--I will really be praying and have passed along the info to others to solicit their prayers as well.

It is stories like these that keep us on our knees and remind us that this is not our home. I met Marcos up at Horn Creek when the youth group came up a few years ago. What an amazing story and what a godly man. I am grieved with you that 'justice' protects only the outward appearance of a man, but cannot see to the heart. But again, this is a broken world and we only pass through for a God-given purpose. May Marcos find his purpose from the Lord in this ugly and painful time. I will be praying for him- he is my brother.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ at Neighborhood Ministries. I will be praying for Marcos and his family that God would rescue him from this trouble and be glorified. Please keep me updated on any progress or other ways to pray on his behalf.

This DOES sound like a plot for a legal thriller! Praying for God to continue to intervene in Marcos' story because it is His story too. And asking Him to work, beyond what we can ask or think, through this, as well -- in Marcos, his family, the legal community, and the NM community -- all you love and minister to. May the God of justice and mercy be glorified.

Recently, I had the privilege to ride the Light Rail and then drive with Marcos’ family. They remain in my thoughts, as they are pressing on in life each day to succeed in school, go to dentist appointments and ride the train and a few buses in order to see their soul mate and father as regularly as possible. Please pray with us as his young family waits. They are trusting in God, yet need our love and support. I thank God for them and the gift of their witness to me on that day!
I would also like to thank Snell and Wilmer for their generosity in for taking this case and for believing and persevering in demonstrating his innocence.
Marcos, we miss you and look forward to seeing you and your family at church again soon.

I am humbled and amazed at how God is using NM to serve those on the margins of society with great tenacity and dedication. Marcos is blessed to be linked to you but, we are blessed too as we are pulled into this story of how God is working among us. Marcos is in my prayers as he does one of the hardest things in life…wait on God with faith.

Hello Marcos,
It has been such a privilege to have known you as a boy, to be able to hear your story over the years, and to be praying for you. God has a hold of your life and it is so evident. I don't know why this has happened to you right now but I couldn't help but think of Joseph and how God delivered him. I don't have any answers but I do have a deep desire to keep praying for you and your family.
I just want you to know that I am "in your corner" and praying for you, dear brother in Jesus.
Best always,

Kit,
Thanks so much for your heart wrenching story about Marcos!! I will keep praying for a miracle.
Just today—I called to find out what happened to one of my Native students—who was getting a B—disappeared two weeks ago….I was told he was in jail and maybe will have to go to prison. I do not have a clue why—but I was so shocked.
So—may you continue to have God’s incredible strength—wisdom and discernment as well as miracles for Marcos.
Also—many prayers for finances as you head into the summer. May you truly be surprised at God’s provision.
Lots of love and prayers,
